O'Neil, who was still in high school years at the time of the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. She advanced to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed by her vocal performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judges. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, top 3, and bottom 2. The judges were surprised at her performance and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. O'Neil's performance on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
