O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High school in 1981. Prior to shifting to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. Her first assignment was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She was a part of the romantic comedy film called She's Having a Baby. She also played a part in the ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included TV shows as well as independent films, among numerous other shows. Her first big role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady as the long-haired, secretariat character from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by a Drama Series Ensemble for the year 1995.
